First things first: What is laminate?
This is a layered product. Starting at the bottom is the underlayment, which provides stability, support, and acts as a noise barrier. While many products do come with pre-attached cushions, some do not, so ask your flooring pro about this. Next is the core, central to the structure. Then comes the image layer, taken with 3D technology. At the very top is the clear wear layer, coated with aluminum oxide, that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs.
Laminate can be cut into planks to give the appearance of hardwood boards or tile-sized pieces. Planks range in width from very narrow, less than five inches, to seven inches. Overall thickness ranges from seven to 12 mil which may or may not include the core and cushioning. Ask your flooring pro for more information.
