Can allergies and carpet flooring live in the same home?

Can allergies and carpet flooring live in the same home?

Yes. Carpeting today has non-toxic and germ-preventing varieties such as Mohawk's Air.o and Phenix Flooring's carpets with Microban technology. You'll find them, and more, in our showroom.

Rugs are inherently hypoallergenic because they trap pollutants in their fibers. Many, however, also have extra features to enhance the hypoallergenic capability.

Explore fiber

Fiber is the material from which the yarns are made.

Some synthetics, like nylon and olefin ( polypropylene), are naturally resistant to mold and mildew. Some, like polyester, have eco-friendly versions where the fibers are created from recycled products.

When a synthetic floor covering is stain resistant, it doesn't need to be treated with harsh chemical cleaning agents. Natural fiber like wool is a good choice, too, since it's eco-friendly.

Wool is non-toxic, chemical-free, and doesn't emit VOCs. It also creates a hostile environment for dust mites, which results in less dust.

Consider carpet pile

Low pile rugs are easier to clean than rugs with long, loose, thick piles. While you’re at it, also think of the weave.

A taut weave traps and won’t conceal dust. Our carpet store has Berbers, and level loops, with loops so tight very little, can get in.

A word about VOCs

Volatile Organic Compounds can be severe triggers for people with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory conditions. Research and discuss your needs thoroughly with our flooring experts. Padding and adhesives should also be eco-friendly.
